Keeping Krolevets Heritage Alive: Culture on the Frontline

The Krolevets Museum in Ukraine is home to a remarkable collection that tells the story of the region’s unique cultural heritage and traditions.

At the heart of this heritage is Krolevets hand-weaving (Кролевецьке перебірне ткацтво) — a distinctive traditional weaving technique recognised as part of Ukraine’s intangible cultural heritage. Preserving this centuries-old craft means more than safeguarding a tradition: it means protecting Ukrainian cultural identity and ensuring that knowledge and skills are passed on to future generations.

For communities living close to the frontline, preserving cultural heritage during wartime presents extraordinary challenges. Museums and cultural institutions must continue to protect their collections, maintain their facilities and keep traditions alive, often while operating with limited resources and under extremely difficult circumstances.

This project will support the Krolevets Museum and its vital work to safeguard and promote Ukraine’s cultural heritage. Funds raised will help provide essential resources, including weaving looms and equipment, training and educational programmes, a generator to ensure continuity during power disruptions, and other practical equipment and supplies needed for the museum’s work.

Through this support, the museum can continue not only to preserve its collection, but also to keep a living cultural tradition alive — teaching new generations, sharing knowledge and strengthening a community’s connection to its history and identity.
